PROGRAM:

09:30 - 10:30 AM: “What makes businesses move (and why some flounder). Lessons from listening, mediation and entrepreneurship” - Nick COFFER
ABSTRACT:
As a broadcaster, businessman and professional mediator, Nick spends his professional life listening to people at moments of uncertainty, transition and change.
Over years of interviewing entrepreneurs, creatives and business owners, and working directly with people who feel stuck, he has noticed strikingly similar patterns in why some businesses move forward while others quietly stall.
This talk explores the role communication plays in progress: how the conversations we avoid, the questions we stop asking, and the stories we tell ourselves can either unlock momentum or create stagnation. It explores how small shifts in communication can change wider dynamics, why avoiding certain conversations can quietly hold businesses back, and how curiosity and clarity create momentum over time.
Drawing on real-world examples of failure, adaptation and success, Nick offers a unique outside perspective on curiosity, creativity and commercial confidence, and why standing still often feels safe but carries the greatest risk.
The session is practical, energising and accessible, designed to leave the audience with fresh perspective, renewed confidence, and a sharper awareness of how communication shapes business outcomes.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: "The economic impact of myopia management for an optical store" - Thibaud Syre
ABSTRACT:
Managing progressive myopia raises key economic questions: what is the cost of intervening versus letting myopia progress at a population level? And in everyday practice, how do we turn this into action, invest in the right equipment, train the team, and build an efficient patient pathway (risk estimation, education, solution selection, follow-up organization, and clinical success criteria)? Finally, how can we ensure the service remains financially sustainable without compromising ethics, while guaranteeing transparency and affordability for patients and their families? Beyond technique, optometrists must structure their practice to meet the challenge of myopia management.

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Ten steps to take if your business is stuck - Julian Wiles
ABSTRACT:
Today you will learn the secrets of owning and running a successful optical business. You will learn what that they didn’t teach you at college. We will explore what it means to be successful. If you can’t find clients who trust you and want to buy from you at a price they are prepared to pay and at a price you need to sell at, you will struggle. On top of this you need to encourage those people to keep coming back and who will tell their friends and family. No matter how good your qualifications, they don’t alter the facts. And you need people around you who understand you, what you are trying to do and are happy to go along with you.
If you were to be the best optician that you could be, what kind of thing would you be thinking, saying and doing? Think of today as an alternative post-graduate degree, from which you will learn many ways of developing a positive mindset. You will learn to see, so you can make better decisions.
Most marketing courses have a huge drop-out rate, are often cost prohibitive and who would have you believe that by doing this, you get that. Sometimes it works. Today we will not allow you to drop out, this session will allow you to rest, pause, look around you and move your business ahead at your pace.
Today will be the most valuable fifty minutes in your entire professional career.
